Not Having a Plan is Planning to Fail

Success requires a good plan. This is true for anything in life, but especially in your career as a personal trainer.

In the end if you don't have a good plan, then how can your clients achieve their fitness goals, and how will you get what you want out of your business?

One of the biggest and quickest ways to fail is to not have a plan. Can you imagine a play without a script, well, okay but even improve has structure and guidelines? Kids’ birthday parties even have plans. In simpler terms, you don't get what you want unless you put in the effort. Therefore, decide what you really want and make a plan for it.

How, though, do you make sure that your plan is more than a mere wish or daydream?
Start by looking ahead. Where do you want to be? You have to know your destination so you can effectively map out your path.

Likewise, the second important aspect of your plan is to know where you are now.

When you can clearly see your present situation and also have your eye on your goal, then it's easier to address what you may have to deal with in between. Ask yourself why you want to attain the goal you have set. Sometimes this question will alter the goal itself. For example, if a person wants to lose 20 pounds but doesn't even have an exercise routine or diet, then the goal is pointless. If that same person wants to lose 50 pounds before a special event in the future, you can help him or her target a plan to move closer to that goal step by step.Whether you are planning your personal training business or helping plan a regimen for a client, write your plan of action down. When a plan is set by pen and paper, it becomes easier for you to grasp the whole idea and make it happen.

Once you have your plan on paper, don’t stop there. Examine it and identify potential barriers that can hamper progress. Take note of those and think about how you can deal with them. In doing so, you are actually preparing Plan B.” Things do not always go as we plan, so it’s best to have a backup plan.

Keep in mind that those who do not plan ahead are bound to trip up. Put it down on writing in order for you to clearly see your path towards your goals. Make a flexible plan that can deal with unexpected situations. Don’t just have a plan; have a “plan B,” too.

Once you have your plan, define your fitness marketing strategy and work that plan.

Fitness Coaches: Balancing Your Business = Freedom

Time management is something all business professionals deal with. In a personal trainer’s business, you are also dealing with the schedules of your clients. Though most people have some idea how to plan their day, very few really utilize the power of leveraging time.

Many people are conditioned to work by a list. Sometimes that's the only way people know how. We know that at 8:15 a.m. we have a meeting, followed by clients at intervals from 8:30 until noon; an hour for lunch, then afternoon activities broken down until 5 pm.. Back at the homestead there are other lists waiting.

That’s a schedule. However, you can work smarter than that.

Leveraging means balancing. Keeping a good balance of your own time is key.

It's hard to create more balance if you don't know where you are in the first place. It's important to evaluate your current situation before you can do anything about it.

Journal your time for several days, preferably a whole week. Then go back and discover how much time you spent with family and friends.
  • Were you creative with a hobby or favorite sport (watching it on TV doesn't count)?
  • What was your last read?
  • What kind of time did you spend exercising?
  • Did you read anything during the trial period?
  • If yes, were you in it for work or just for the fun of it?
  • To reach a specific personal goal, how much time was alloted for it?
If you're stuck on a typical "to do" list schedule, chances are you'll see that your time is imbalanced in some of these areas. Do the math on where you spent your time and on what. How many hours were for work, family, hobby, reading, exercise? Get the percentages. How much time did you allot for career compared to family and other important aspects? This might be a real eye opener!

The great part about this exercise is that once you see how little time you spend on personal development, you can devise a plan to change it. Figure out what kind of time you want to devote to each aspect of your life.

When you understand the idea of time leverage, your life won’t be held hostage by a “to do” list ever again! Your "to do" list is a great way to remind you of duties, but it shouldn't take you away from the life you should be enjoying.
