Where the personal training industry is heading

It can be hard to think about the future. That’s especially so today. The economic doldrums means that we’re all focusing on surviving until the next month or week.

But fitness professionals must always look toward the future, and the moves that they’ll have to make to bring in customers and earn higher profits.

I know full well that the word “change” can scare trainers. It’s an especially frightening word for business owners. But I have some good news for you: Many of the changes coming to the fitness industry will actually benefit you and your business.
Let’s begin with online marketing. You may have survived so far with traditional advertising. Maybe you regularly take out an ad in the community newspaper. Or you may promote your business by placing flyers in the windows of local businesses. That method won’t work much longer. In fact, it probably isn’t good enough today.

Promoting on the Web is key

You’ll have no choice in the future but to promote your fitness business on the Internet. You’ll have to post your activity schedule on your Facebook page. You’ll have to Tweet on Twitter to let students know about your new referral program. You’ll benefit from creating and running a fitness blog. And you should be scripting and filming short videos to post on YouTube.

If you fight this change, and determine that Web marketing isn’t fo r you, you’ll lose out on the growing youth market. That’s as good as throwing your dollars away. This doesn’t have to be a negative, though. It’s difficult to excel at online marketing. But when you do, you’ll find that it’s an exceptionally effective way to attract new students. And don’t forget that this type of promotion is either inexpensive or free.

The online marketing boom is just one of several changes that you’ll have to be ready for. For example, you’ll also need to start offering shorter one-on-one training sessions with your cutomers. This may sound like bad news to you. But don’t forget, your students are busy people. They’re logging longer hours and taking on more responsibilities. Hour-long training sessions simply don’t fit into their busy schedules. You may have to focus more on 30-minute or 45-minute sessions.

Don’t get too upset at this. You can cram a lot of fitness education in half an hour. Shorter sessions also allow you to schedule more clients during the workday. That might be a profitable move for your business.
The more students, the larger the earnings

Get ready to work with bigger groups, too. People enjoy working out with big groups of fellow exercisers. There’s a feeling of togetherness when many students get together for a unified goal. Keeping this in mind, remember to to offer many group classes throughout the week. Fitness boot camps are also more popular with students. Like group exercise sessions, these specialized camps are steadily becoming more popular.

Finally, don’t be shocked if your clients want you to be their fitness mentor. They’ll want your thoughts on creating heart-healthy meal plans. They’ll call you for advice on the best home exercise equipment. They may even ask if you know any nearby doctors who concentrate more on alternative medical treatments than on recommending the newest drug. In short, they’ll turn to you to become a complete health adviser.

Don’t look at this change as anything but a positive. If you’re working as your clients’ health adviser, you’re more crucial to them. That makes it more difficult for them to cut you loose when their finances get tight. It also gives you the chance to provide eBooks and other multi-media items to clients who now view you as an integral part of their wellness programs.
